The Ekiti State House of Assembly Member and Chairman House Committee on Health, Honorable (Mrs) Abimbola Solanke has called on both men and women to prioritize their health through regular self-examination and timely medical screening as the country joins the rest of the world to mark 2026 Cancer Day.
In a message to commemorate the 2026 edition with the theme: ‘United by Unique ‘Hon. Solanke stressed that early detection remains crucial in saving lives.
“As men, women, fathers, mothers, sisters, and daughters, our health must remain a priority. Early detection saves lives, regular self-examination and timely medical screening are key in the fight against various forms of cancer,” she said.
Hon. Solanke observed that cancer is no longer a silent crisis in the African region, noting that it is a growing public health emergency that demands urgent, equitable and sustained action.
She further explained that cancer is becoming one of the leading causes of premature death as more than a million new cases are diagnosed and nearly a million people lose their lives to the disease.
According to her, behind the numbers are mothers, fathers, young people and families whose Iives are cut short.
Solanke who listed various forms of cancer related disease, noted that most women, are screened but never treated the disease with children diagnose too late.
The lawmaker who lauded Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji for the provision of modern medical equipment and infrastructural upgrade in the health sector towards addressing for screening, early detection and diagnosis of cancer related diseases.
Part of this provision according to Solanke is Mammogram Machine machine at the Ekiti State University teaching Hospital(EKSUTH).
Honourable Solanke who represents Moba Constituency 1 in the Ekiti State House of Assembly promised to continue to initiate legislations that will ensure accessible, affordable and qualitative health service delivery to the citizens.
