As part of moves to curb the indiscriminate wastes disposal in Ado Ekiti and other parts of the state, Ekiti State Government has began an awareness and sensitization programme with relevant stakeholders in the state.
The latest engagement was organized by the Director General Community Communications, Mrs Mary Oso-Omotoso held at the Lady Jibowu Hall, Government House, Ado Ekiti.
The sensitization programme became expedient sequel to the provision of 20 Waste Bins by the State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji barely a week ago for public use.
Those at the programme included representatives of traders across major markets in the capital city, Artisans, landlords association, environmental officers and others.
The Director General Community Communications, Mrs Mary Oso-Omotosho who spoke on the importance of proper waste disposal submitted that the move engender cleaner, safer and hygienic environment.
Lamenting the indiscriminate dumping of refuses in the capital city, Mrs Omotosho said government has provided about 20 bins for wastes collection which would be placed in strategic areas such as Okesa market, Obas market, Bisi, Mojere and Fayose markets, Ojudo, Atikankan, Okeyinmi Ijigbo roundabout and Odo Ado area amongst others.
The DG Community Communications who stressed the need for people to have the attitudinal change on maintaining a cleaner environment devoid of epidemics, urged participants to pass the message to others on proper waste disposal.
The Commissioner for Environment, Chief Tosin Aluko and Information Commissioner, Chief Taiwo Olatubosun informed the gathering that Governor Biodun Oyebanji has made approval for the provision of another set of 20 Waste Bins urging the people, to abide by the environmental laws
Also, the Director General, Ekiti State Waste Management Authority, Mr Sunkanmi Onipede who said stiff penalties awaits offenders explained the various steps taken for proper waste disposal.
Market Traders and other participants at the forum ruminated with the organizers on appropriate areas where to place the waste bins for effective use
The Organizers promised to embark on a street to street sensitization of residents on proper waste disposal
