In what seems to be a serial decisions by government of sub-nationals to alleviate financial burdens of parents, Ekiti State Government has banned graduation ceremonies of pupils in the kindergarten, Nursery, Primary and secondary classes in the state public and private schools.
In a Circular released from the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Mike Omolayo, the ban is said to take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.
Ekiti State became the fifth state after Abia, Edo, Imo, Kogi, and Ondo who had made such decision in Nigeria, to reduce unnecessary expenses and shift the focus of early education from elaborate events to academic and moral development.
The new policy according to the State Ministry of education was to excesses and financial pressure associated with such ceremonies.
The circular also reads that, parents should take note that siblings can now pass textbooks to their younger ones as long as the books are in good condition
Furthermore, it states that ”government remains resolute to one in six years book review, while that of secondary school level has been changed from once in three years to once in four years.”
