The wife of Ekiti State Governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji has continued with her advocacy on prevention strategies to curb the menace among the youth in the society.
This latest call was made at the maiden edition of annual Sisters Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Province 12, held at the Regional headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, the State capital.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s convention, ‘’Navigating the Challenges of Parenting in Times like These’’ Dr Olayemi described parenting as it as a distinct ways parents interact with guide their children, shaping their behavior, morals ad development.
The Governor’s wife who was represented by the Commissioner in charge of Human Resources Management at Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Olufunke Fajobi said parents must take proactive measures, actions and responsibilities to ensure good future for their children.
She dwelt on some biblical scriptures to back the theme of the convention noting that negligence of some parents most time leads their children to becoming wayward thereby indulging themselves into vices like drugs, smoking, cultism, rape, cyber crime, thuggery among others.
The Ekiti first lady, who described the age of responsibility to be the age at which children were considered responsible for the cause of their actions or inactions, reiterated that parents and guardians must continually correct and guide their children even after attaining the “age of responsibility’’.
Oyebanji said ‘’we are living in what the Bible describes as the perilous time where values are being redefined. Social media, online influences, and peer groups are shaping our children more than family altars. Disobedience, disrespect, and moral compromise are now normalized.’’
Dr Olayemi advised parents to create and spend enough time with them in spite of their tight scheduled at work, emphasizing the need to show good attitudes, equal love and affections toward all our children, no matter the differences in their gifts or intellectual abilities.
She also harped on training and monitoring the activities of children in school and out of school.
Oyebanji concluded ‘’Are you a role model? can your children look up to you? Is our home a role model to them ? Are you a Godly woman? Do you pray? read the word? righteous? Are you humble? Do you possess the fruit of the Spirit? If children cannot boldly say I want to be like my mother something is wrong. We must live as example, they see what you do everyday.’’
